04/01 – Vegas GPT Tournament Report

On Saturday, I played in my first sanctioned Legacy tournament in a few months. Grand Prix Vegas is going to have Legacy as one of its three main events. After pre-registeration, I directed my attention to local Grand Prix Trials to try to earn two byes. The first was at Geekery HQ a wonderful shop out in Astoria run by Kevin An. I strongly recommend anyone looking for a strong eternal scene behind a committed store to check them out.

36 players showed up on a beautiful Saturday afternoon to play some Legacy. Today, I decided to take a break from my usual Lands list and registered a standard Aggro Loam deck with some innovations from a friend and fellow competitor, Max Lebedev.

Round 1 vs Charles (Predict Miracles)

Charles is actually a part of the NYU Magic group but I hadn’t actually played with him until this tournament. I win the die roll and keep a turn 1 Chalice of the Void off Mox Diamond. I slam the cards and get a grunt from Charles as it resolves. Charles follows with an Island and ships the turn. On turn 2, I play a land and Sylvan Library and pass back. Charles draws one more card and concedes the game. I later find out he had 4 1 mana cantrips and 3 lands in hand and conceded after drawing a 5th cantrip. His early concession has me thinking he is a combo deck so I board appropriately for Sneak and Show.

+2 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben/+2 Swords to Plowshares/+1 Phyrexian Revoker/+1 Ghost Quarter/-3 Punishing Fire/-3 Abrupt Decay/-1 Scavenging Ooze/-1 Life from the Loam

I keep a turn 1 Dark Confidant and turn 3 Knight of the Reliquary hand on the draw for game 2. Charles plays 2 Islands into Counterbalance and I cringe a little over the loss of Abrupt Decays. I build a slow board of creatures into a top deck [/c]Terminus followed by a [c]From the Ashes. The card reduces my mana base to single Forest and Mox Diamond. Luckily, I have Life from the Loam and I’m able to recover and grind a victory with the combo.

1-0 (2-0 in games)

Round 2 vs Mike (The Epic Storm)

I win the die roll and keep yet another turn 1 Chalice of the Void hand, one of my few outs against Storm in game 1. I make my plays and after my opponent exiles Burning Wish to Chrome Mox, he concedes on turn 2. I prepare for another combo match.

+2 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben/+1 Phyrexian Revoker/+1 Ghost Quarter/+1 Golgari Charm/+3 Crop Rotation/-3 Punishing Fire/-3 Abrupt Decay/-2 Life from the Loam

I start game 2 with a mulligan to 6 and a turn 1 Chalice of the Void for 0 and turn 2 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben. While Mike struggles to play anything, I follow up with Dark Confidant and attack for game over 4 turns.

2-0 (4-0 in games)

Round 3 vs Adam (UW Landstill)

I watched Adam play his previous round and knew he was on a UW Landstill variant with Humility and Energy Field. Game 1, I keep an aggressive 7 with early Knight of the Reliquary and Dark Confidant for pressure. I manage to beat him down quickly while his deck fails to establish.

-3 Punishing Fire/+1 Ghost Quarter/+1 Golgari Charm/+1 Reclamation Sage

Game 2 is long and tedious. Adam setups up an early Rest in Peace and my deck becomes a pile of bears. I am putting good pressure on his life total with a Knight of the Reliquary, Gaddock Teeg and Scavenging Ooze but he is able to stabilize with a pair of Energy Fields. Luckily I top deck a pair of Abrupt Decays and take the match. I think this match up becomes heavily unfavorable later in the game and I topdecked really well.

3-0 (6-0 in games)

Round 4 vs Gabe (BUG Delver)

Although Gabe and I did not come together for this event, we saw each other and immediately started talking about various strategies. It’s unfortunate that we have to face each other in the deciding round but we agree to play it all the way out. Gabe is on BUG Delver with a slightly more midrange game plan which I assume is worse off for me. I land a Knight of the Reliquary a few turns into the game and combo off correctly assessing his deck has no real answer for Marit Liege.

-1 Gaddock Teeg/-1 Life from the Loam/-1 Qasali Pridemage/+1 Ghost Quarter/+1 Meren of Clan Nel Toth/+1 Toxic Deluge

Game 2 Gabe flips a turn 1 Delver of Secrets and turn 2 Deathrite Shaman and beings beating me down. I try to stabilize with Punishing Fire but his creatures make quick work of me.

We start game 3 with only 15 minutes left in the round and we know we have to go quick. We both take mulligans and he ends up keeping a land light hand. Unfortunately, he does not draw any more lands and his forced to concede to a very fast beat down. I felt this non-game could have gone very differently if things were slower.

4-0 (8-1 in games)

Round 5 Intentional Draw

Round 6 Intentional Draw

4-0-2 to end top seed going into top 8

Quarterfinals vs Chris (BUG Delver)

I spend a few turns fetching and playing two drops into counter spells and eventually land a Knight of the Reliquary which goes the distance.

-1 Gaddock Teeg/-1 Life from the Loam/-1 Qasali Pridemage/+1 Ghost Quarter/+1 Meren of Clan Nel Toth/+1 Toxic Deluge

Game 2, Chris flips a Delver of Secrets which I Punishing Fire and then plays a True Name Nemesis. I can’t find Liliana of the Veil and also get my Life from the Loam extracted. I make the mistake of not conceding since I was dead on board and end up revealing my deck to my opponent.

-1 Dark Confidant/+1 Golgari Charm

Game 3, we play our cards back and forth until he lands True Name Nemesis and begins beating me down. I manage to stabilize with a Liliana of the Veil and end the game with a OTK hit off a giant Knight of the Reliquary.

Semifinals vs Sam(Miracles)

I’m stoked and excited to play against Sam Roukas. I play an early Deathrite Shaman which starts to drawn Sam’s life. I note that he’s on predicts and not very many creatures. A Liliana of the Veil and Knight of the Reliquary forces Sam to concede.

-1 Mox Diamond/-1 Deathrite Shaman/-1 Punishing Fire/-1 Cabal Pit/-1 Wasteland/+1 Phyrexian Revoker/+1 Chandra, Torch of Defiance[/c[/+2 [c]Thalia, Guardian of Thraben[c]/+1 [c]Reclamation Sage

Game 2, I keep a shaky 5 with a lot of lands. While Sam aggressively cycles through his deck with Ponders and Predicts I run low on threats. After a Terminus wipes my field, I am forced to top deck while Sam finds an Entreat the Angels.

Game 3, I’m forced to keep another shaky 5 with a Mox Diamonds, Chandra, Torch of Defiance and lands. I play the early Chandra, Torch of Defiance but Sam has the Force of Will and the tempo loss is too great. I am even more surprised when he drops a Monastery Mentor and kills me with tokens and two Sensei’s Divining Tops. Sam mentions that he plays 2 Entreat the Angel main and 3 Monastery Mentor in the side. Against particular match ups where he expects the opponent to board in for one of the win conditions, he can play mind games over which win condition he will have. Against Aggro Loam, he feels have high threat density and playing an aggressively lets him steal wins before I establish a lock.

I end the tournament with a Savannah and Sam is able to split the finals for the 2 byes. I’m a little frustrated especially since I came so close but I know I have the ability to do it.
